Zimbabwe is one of the countries within the Sub-Saharan region that is seriously affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. The epidemic in Zimbabwe is generalized and mature. Even though HIV prevalence among 15-45 year olds has declined from 24.6% in 2003 to 14.6% in 2009 the rate of new infections and HIV and AIDS related mortality remains very high.
It is estimated that 1.1 million people were living with HIV (PLHIV) in Zimbabwe as of December 2009, and of these 105,740 were children. There are also many child headed households in the country and all these children require assistance if they are to fit well in the society.
